YESTERDAY IS BUT A DREAM, AND TOMORROW ONLY A VISION, TODAY WELL LIVED, MAKES EVERY YESTERDAY

YESTERDAY IS BUT A DREAM, AND TOMORROW ONLY A VISION, TODAY WELL LIVED, MAKES EVERY YESTERDAY

The Buddha was asked why people who have developed their minds always appear so calm and radiant. The Buddha replied,

“They sorrow not for what is past,
They yearn not after that, which is not come,
The present is sufficient for them,
Hence it is they appear so radiant.
Having longing for the future, sorrowing over what is past, By this fools are withered up
As a cut-down tender reed.”

The secret of happy, successful living lies in doing what needs to be done now. We should not worry about the past or future. We cannot go back to the past to undo the things that we have done. Nor can we anticipate everything that may happen in the future due to conditions in the world, which are constantly changing and unpredictable. There is but one moment of time over which we have some conscious control – the present moment.

We need to learn how to transform our minds and overcome unwholesome habits which are the driving forces for self-improvement. Self- reflection is the driving force behind success. Confidence is the driving force for a harmonious family, and selflessness is the greatest driving force for peace in the universe. We should also use our compassion, wisdom, tolerance and confidence to help others activate their own driving forces in life.

RELEASE YOUR MIND - Dhammapada (Verse 348)

“Let go the past. Let go the future. Let go the present (front back and middle). Crossing to the farther shore of existence, with mind released.”

A youth fell in love with a female acrobat and, becoming an acrobat himself, wandered from place to place. One day the Buddha met him and uttered this verse in admonition.
